| This photo depicts the uniform of an Australian soldier of the Light Horse. The traditional "Diggers" hat features prominently and was a trademark of the Australian Forces. The "Digger" or Slouch Hat has long been a part of the Australian military tradition and was made of rabbit fur felt or wool felt. The reasoning for the upturned side brim is thought to give clearance for a lance or riffle held over the shoulder. The soldier pictured here is J. Westley Montgomery of the Australian Light Horse approx. 1914 - 1918.Image Submitted By: E. Robertson - Toronto, Canada. |
